The Shawshank Redemption

In writer-director Frank Darabont's THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison for the murders of his wife and her lover in the late 1940s. However, only Andy knows that he didn't commit the crimes. Sent to Shawshank Prison to do hard time, Andy - a taciturn banker in the outside world - as to learn to get by in the brutal, cutthroat confines of prison life. His quiet strength slowly earns the respect of his fellow inmates - most notably, Red (Morgan Freeman) - and even much of the prison staff. But Andy's seemingly stoic acceptance of his unjust imprisonment hides a fierce determination for freedom. This beautifully crafted movie features touching and sincere performances from the entire cast, with an uplifting message about humanity's indomitable spirit and the redemptive value of hope. Based on the novella RITA HAYWORTH AND SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION by Stephen King, Darabont's intriguing adaptation is easily one of the finest films of the 1990s.

Algumas dicas para melhorar seu inglês...

1 - Ouça músicas, assita a filmes e seriados. Eles são muito bons para melhorar o seu LISTENING, para adquirir vocabulário, porém não é o melhor meio de aprender gramática. Na música por exemplo, para fazer as rimas soarem legal os músicos usam o inglês de maneira informal, às vezes até errada, esquecendo das formas corretas da gramática. Em seriados e filmes, a mesma coisa, e também está presente um GRANDE número de gírias. Não estou querendo dizer que temos que falar o inglês PERFEITAMENTE CORRETO, mas também temos que saber a forma correta dele, e concordo que aprender gírias é bem legal.

2 - Um outro meio muito bom para desenvolver o seu inglês é a Internet. Digite no Google alguma coisa tipo "aprender inglês" ou coisa parecida e você verá vários sites que se disponibilizaram a ensinar inglês, porém nem todos são muito confiáveis. Clue

A group of blackmailed guests gather in a remote mansion, hosted by a daffy butler (Tim Curry), in this campy adaptation of the popular board game. Suspicions flare when their ostensible extortionist, Mr. Boddy, appears--and drops dead in the study. Hidden passageways, double entendres, and creative murder weapons come into play as bodies drop, disappear, and reappear on one dark and stormy night. An all-star cast assume the roles of Professor Plum (Christopher Lloyd), Mrs. White (Madeline Kahn), Miss Scarlet (Lesley Ann Warren), and the rest of the multicolored bunch as the one-liners fly in this jaunty whodunit. It all concludes with three alternate endings that let viewers decide who the real murderer was.

Changeling

At first, Clint Eastwood's CHANGELING could appear to be following too closely in the footsteps of his earlier Oscar winner, MYSTIC RIVER, since both films center on a missing child. But while his previous film was based on a Dennis Lehane novel, CHANGELING carries a particular weight because it is based on a true story, and one that isn't largely known. Angelina Jolie stars as Christine Collins, a single mother working in 1928 Los Angeles when her son goes missing. A boy is returned to her months later by the police, but she is shocked and disheartened when she realizes that the boy isn't her son. Joined by a crusading pastor (John Malkovich), Christine battles for justice against the corrupt L.A.P.D. while she continues to search for her child. Eventually her fight against the cops lands her in a mental hospital, where she is surrounded by others with a similar plight. At times, CHANGELING is incredibly difficult to watch. Jolie gives an authentic, anguished performance, and the on-screen tragedy is quite disturbing, largely because of its basis in reality. But Eastwood has crafted another Oscar-worthy film that is certainly worth sitting through, even if a tissue or two is required. Screenwriter J. Michael Straczynski had been best known for his work in science fiction (BABYLON FIVE) and graphic novels, but he makes an adept transition to feature drama with this film. Its unusual focus--on the victim and her struggle for justice, rather than on the criminal and the crime--brings further depth to the film. As always, Amy Ryan (an Oscar nominee for GONE BABY GONE) perfectly morphs into her role (this time as a prostitute imprisoned in the mental hospital), and the film's many child actors are compelling to watch.

Mesmo não entendendo muito a língua, essa técnica do filme ajuda muito a perder o medo de pensar em outra língua, parar de traduzir mentalmente e começar a pensar em inglês!

Vantage Point

A presidential assassination attempt is told from multiple points of view in Pete Travis's directorial debut, VANTAGE POINT. U.S. president Ashton (William Hurt) is in Salamanca, Spain (though much of the film was actually shot in Mexico), to announce plans for a major global summit on terrorism. But as he stands behind the podium in front of an adoring crowd (with protesters blocked off from the stage), he is shot twice, followed shortly by a small explosion and then a massive blast. Secret Service Agents Barnes (Dennis Quaid), Taylor (Matthew Fox), and Holden (Richard T. Jones) immediately jump into action, trying to find the terrorists responsible amid all the chaos. The thriller first shows the events through the eyes of television news producer Rex Brooks (Sigourney Weaver), and then the film rewinds, replaying the action from a different point of view. Each perspective reveals a few more clues, then rewinds again, taking the audience through the assassination attempt and its aftermath again. VANTAGE POINT has the feel of the 1950 Akira Kurosawa classic RASHOMON, told with the speed of the television show 24. The all-star cast also includes Forest Whitaker, who gives another fine performance, playing an American tourist recording everything on his video camera. The rewind device - reminiscent of the Bill Murray comedy GROUNDHOG DAY - could have been gimmicky, but instead Travis and first-time screenwriter Barry L. Levy make it work, as more details are revealed with each flashback, leading to a pulse-pounding chase and surprising finale.

The Green Mile

"The Green Mile" is told in a flashback narrated by Paul Edgecomb to his friend Elaine Connelly. Edgecomb is now living in an old-age home some six decades after working as the head guard on Death Row at Cold Mountain Penitentiary.
Edgecomb’s tour of duty at Cold Mountain in the Depression-era South included watch over a quartet of killers awaiting their final walk down "the Green Mile," the stretch of green linoleum flooring that took convicts from their jail cells to the electric chair. Over the years, Edgecomb walked the mile with a variety of cons. He had never before encountered someone like John Coffey, a massive black man convicted of brutally killing a pair of nine-year-old sisters. Coffey certainly had the size and strength to kill anyone, but his demeanor starkly contrasted with his appearance. Beyond his simple, naive nature and a deathly fear of the dark, Coffey seemed to possess a prodigious, supernatural gift. Edgecomb began to question whether Coffey was truly guilty of murdering the two girls. As the story unfolds, Paul Edgecomb learns that, sometimes, miracles happen in the most unexpected places.

British director Danny Boyle takes another intriguing career turn with this heartfelt underdog tale. Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) is a street kid (or "slumdog") who has landed an appearance on India's version of the hit TV game show WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE? Jamal exceeds expectations on the show, and the producers alert the police after they become suspicious of his methods. The young contestant is subsequently arrested and is interrogated at the hands of a nameless police inspector (played by Bollywood star Irfan Khan). As the interrogation proceeds, Boyle tells Jamal's story through harrowing flashbacks that both show the terrible poverty of Mumbai and help explain how he knew the answers to the MILLIONAIRE questions. SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE is a tightly woven story that has been expertly edited into shape. The contrast between Jamal's upbringing and his chance of escaping it on the show are adeptly juxtaposed. Mumbai is portrayed as a place of terrifying poverty and unforgettable brutality, and Jamal and his brother get into a never-ending succession of challenging situations. But the way Boyle ties together Jamal's life experiences with his answers on the show is quite brilliant, and the film really does run the full gamut of emotions as we see him growing up, falling in love, coming close to death, and teetering on the brink of escaping from his terrible predicament. The film belongs to Boyle's cast, who are mostly unknown outside of India. Patel, in particular, gives a startlingly mature performance that audiences are likely to remember long after the credits role on this affecting feature.

"The Terminal" tells the story of Viktor Navorski (Tom Hanks), a visitor to New York from Eastern Europe, whose homeland erupts in a fiery coup while he is in the air en route to America. As the weeks and months stretch on, Viktor finds the compressed universe of the terminal to be a richly complex world of absurdity, generosity, ambition, amusement, status, serendipity and even romance with a beautiful flight attendant named Amelia (Catherine Zeta-Jones). But Viktor has long worn out his welcome with airport official Frank Dixon (Stanley Tucci), who considers him a bureaucratic glitch, a problem he cannot control but wants desperately to erase.

An original musical film, Across The Universe is a fictional love story set in the 1960s amid the turbulent years of anti-war protest, the struggle for free speech and civil rights, mind exploration and rock and roll. At once gritty, whimsical and highly theatrical, the story moves from high schools and universities in Massachusetts, Princeton and Ohio to the Lower East Side of Manhattan, the Detroit riots, the killing fields of Vietnam and the dockyards of Liverpool. A combination of live action and painted and three-dimensional animation, the film is paired with many Beatles songs that defined the time.

Não importa o que as distribuidoras de gasolina façam para conquistar seu público. Você não quer gasolina no puro sentido da palavra, você somente quer chegar em algum lugar. Seja viajar, ir para o trabalho, passear, ou qualquer outro trajeto. A gasolina é somente o meio que permite que você atinja um outro objetivo, de seu agrado.

Se levarmos este pensamento para o aprendizado do inglês, surge a questão: se ninguém quer aprender inglês só por aprender, por que queremos aprender então?

É uma viagem ao exterior, onde o inglês será imprescindível? É a oportunidade de crescer profissionalmente e alcançar uma vaga que exige o conhecimento do idioma? Talvez seja para pesquisar na internet algum assunto tão novo que ainda não existe algum site em português. Você pode querer aprender o inglês para entender melhor os filmes, letras de música de suas bandas preferidas, jogos de videogame. Conversar online e fazer amigos do mundo inteiro. Ler livros em lançamento ou mesmo antigos, que ainda não saíram em português. Em todos estes exemplos o conhecimento do inglês serve apenas como ferramenta para se atingir um objetivo (ou vários ao mesmo tempo).

Também existem aqueles que estudam o inglês pelo simples prazer de aprender. São aqueles que gostam de aprender, e “de lambuja” ainda aproveitam todas as oportunidades que um conhecedor do idioma pode desfrutar.
